one work day to go

A daily something that will not be missed

While sitting in traffic on the way home from my next to last day at A-DEC I realized how lucky I really was to be able to take a chance like The Plan.   I made a mental note to remember that when I get bogged down on the daily grind of golf training, because no matter how much you love what you do, there are times when work is work.  Not sure yet if I do love golf, but I love the idea of tackling a large unknown.  The Plan could have been any of a number of pursuits, but the bottom line is that it is what I chose to do and now, starting Monday, will be who I am.  One more day as a photographer and then Dan the Golfer has his turn at this wacky thing we call life.  Can’t wait for Monday.

entering with a cold

Today is the last Tuesday as a commercial photographer.  As a nice sendoff for The Dan Plan, my body decided to catch a nasty little head cold.

The cold was probably do to flying to Omaha this past weekend to shoot my sister-in-law’s sister’s wedding.  There were a lot of kids around and not enough sleep was had.  That, and I missed the connecting flight back, so spent a good part of the day in the Denver airport..

At any rate, have a cold so my energy is down, but hope to fight it off by the weekend so I can go around and get a few things I need to start The Plan.  In particular, I’m going to need some good rain gear, it is Oregon in the spring, after all.

My coach is going to be out of town for the kickoff week, too.  But, not to worry about that, we are going to meet on Friday and hopefully get a game-plan down on what I can do throughout the first week.

I still have a large number of logistical questions.  Think that these will have to answer themselves as we go along.  There is no reference book to use, will just take it day by day.

For now, work and then straight to bed, gotta fight this thing off!

Random golf bag

Nike golf bag that appeared in the cubical

This Nike golf bag randomly showed up in the cubical this morning.  Wasn’t sure where from, nobody would admit to bringing it, so we thought that perhaps it had heard about the plan and wanted a piece of action.  It is from Pumpkin Ridge, which also happens to be where my coach is the head pro..

But, as it turns out, a writer, also named Dan, brought it in for me to use.  Much appreciated!  Seeing as I don’t have clubs yet, I had not thought much about a golf bag, but will definitely need one!

Plan talk and possible excuses

Filed under: background — admin @ 11:28 am

Must admit I get excited when there is a chance to talk about the plan with someone new.  Last night, there were plenty of chances for that.  I am in Omaha visiting my brother and his family and last night we went to my sister-in-law’s sister’s wedding.  The family is a large mid-western sort with eight athletically oriented siblings, almost all of which have significant others and children.  That, along with friends and extended family, made for a large wedding with plenty of time for conversation about The Plan.  Was nice to chat, but I think it would be good to have a Dan Plan ambassador around to explain the basics whenever someone new wants to hear about it..

All in all people were encouraging and interested. In the future, I Think I need to bring cards for people so they will remember to check out the site and follow along as The Plan gets rolling.

On the negative side, the general consensus was that it would not be possible to do if I had children.  I don’t agree with that, but understand that there are concerns with such a drastic change in life when there is a family involved.  To help explain my thoughts, I asked my brother to explain a bit.

Matt, why do people say that it would not be possible to do The Plan if you had children?

“One is that it’s an excuse.  You’re doing a cool thing, and people say here’s why I can’t do a cool thing ‘because I have kids.’    Part of it is legitimate, because if you do have children you have a responsibility for them, you have that additional responsibility for them so it makes you more risk adverse.  For you, because you don’t have kids it makes you a little easier to absorb the chance of not succeeding.”

what’s the difference of The Plan and a normal job?

“The difference is that the distributions of outcomes is much more variable for what you’re doing.  The actual value and expected outcome in my job doesn’t vary.  For what you are doing, the outcome could swing from five dollars to two million, maybe 50 percent of the time you would not be able to feed your family.  In your situation you would like to live an interesting life and that is worth more than the security of having a job…  Most people are drawn towards a stable life even before they have kids because evolutionarily there is the best overall chance of perpetuation.”

“the reality of what you are doing is a chance.  There is a high possibility that you will fail and that is why it is a rational argument for people to not take the chance you are doing.  A lot of times people can take chances in their life without taking financial risks, for example going to art school in the evenings while they keep their day job.  They can take a chance and try something new, but if it fails they have not risked their job and their financial security, and it’s a tragedy that more people don’t try to take chances like that in life.”

There are definitely some points worthy of argument in there, but all in all I think that he makes some good points.  It is good to weigh the risks and the possible rewards of any decision, especially one that involves quitting your day job..

I’ve thought about it for more than a year now and have no hesitations or reservations about The Plan. For me, the possibilities of transformation definitely outweigh the potential risks involved.

why golf?

Pretty much the first question anyone asks, especially those who know me, is “why golf?”

First of all, I’m not exactly the most “sporty” guy in the world.  That said, I do enjoy watching a variety of games, from tennis to college football, and am a really big fan of stats (grew up in a numbers/math oriented family).  And so, have watched a bit of golf in my day, but by no means follow or even completely understand the game at this point.

So.  Why golf?

There are a number of reasons why I chose to pursue golf.

First and foremost:  It is a field of work completely different from what I currently do or have ever done.  I’ve worked in offices, in restaurants, in the field as a photojournalist and even a stint as an apple picker, but never have I concentrated on a physical pursuit.

Second:  Golf, to me, seems like an endeavor that by it’s nature does not become routine.  There is a nearly infinite number of ways in which to get the ball from point A to point B.  You could play the same hole a thousand times, but unless you are playing in a vacuum, the challenge of that hole will change each time.

Third:  I enjoy the physics of the game; velocity, momentum, spin, trajectory, wind speed, loft..

Fourth:  The game is played outside, and all over the world.  Traveling has always been a passion, and I’m not a fan of florescent lighting.

Fifth:  It is you against yourself.  The only person I can blame for failing is myself (perhaps this will be added to the “top reasons I no longer golf” list years from now)  Along with this is the idea of being your own boss.  It will only be me telling me how hard to work or whether or not to take a break and what time to go home, etc.

Sixth:  It will force me to go against my own nature and take things slowly.  I generally have a bad habit of just wanting to finish things as fast as possible and not concentrating on details.  This won’t be possible when my goal for the first month is to learn how to putt from three feet away.  Patience is a must.

So those are a few of the reasons that I chose golf, but it’s important for me to reiterate that The Plan is not really about golf.  There are also a few advantages to the sport that help demonstrate the point of human potential that I would like to explore in the documentary.  (yep, a list, again.)

First:  Athletes are “pedestal people.”  Point being, it is hard to look at someone like a Albert Pujols, Roger Federer or Tiger Woods as an average guy.  We see them as extreme examples of “talent” and that they were born with something that the rest of us were not.  If the plan is successful, there is no reason why anyone, even if they think it is too late, couldn’t concentrate their energy for a four year training and become what they dream of being.  Just like how some people say they are not good at math and others cannot draw, if I can document the training through and through, it will be possible to see what it takes and how someone becomes great at a specific field, leveling the playing field and showing how “pedestal people” are in actuality just really, really, hard workers.

Second:  Golf is measured in numbers.  It would be much more difficult to document how a person becomes an architect, plumber or creative director.  In golf, I can notch my successes and failures on a daily basis, so progress is easy to delineated.

Third:  To repeat from earlier, it is outside.  Outdoors makes for much more entertaining video footage than endless hours pouring over a book crunching for a final.  Hopefully when the tournament season is upon The Plan, we will be able to take the show on the road and get some good shots.

Fourth:  Small point, (that kind of meshes with the “why golf,” but also will help make an interesting documentary) but I am fascinated by the idea and challenge of “Q-School.”  It is where amateurs compete to obtain their PGA tour card and is apparently a brutal annual competition.  At this point, I know little about it other than it sounds interesting.

Those are a few of the reasons.  A little deeper than just the surface, I hope.  There are of course other reasons, but all in all golf just seemed to be a perfect fit.

Wednesday thoughts

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:29 am

Spent the earlier part of this week trying to email or call anyone I knew who was connected to any type of media and made some decent progress/connections, but not much has panned out in the sense of actual “contacts.”  Was thinking that I need to try anything I can to get the story out, but last night I realized that no matter who I contact or how the story gets out, it’s not much of a story unless I can actually become a decent golfer.   That and the fact that there are the next four years to build momentum in the story, so no need to sweat it at this point.  If three years from now I am still sitting here without a single soul knowing about the project then I will be worried, but for the time being, I should concentrate on finishing up out at A-DEC, going to Omaha this weekend to shoot a wedding and then getting some golf clubs.

Guess I realized that there’s no need to fret over any of this, just take it one little putt at a time.

tea time

Newberg desk

Sitting at my current job, sipping a cup of tea and wondering what it is I’m getting myself into. Not so much in a negative way, just curious as to what the day to day will be like starting in two weeks.

There are so many unanswered questions still about what the daily life is like of a professional athlete (I say professional, because we are going to try and train exactly how a top-athlete would train, so my life should emulate that of a pro). Will there be time for a nice cup of tea and a little cruising of the internet? Maybe an afternoon walk to the park? Hard to say. Guess the only way we’ll find out is by doing it and seeing what the possibilities and limitations of the new lifestyle are.

Regardless, it is very exciting to be just two weeks away!

Hopefully this week we will branch out and make some contacts at local public golf courses that are cool with me using their putting greens for hours at a time on a daily basis. And, Christopher and I are going to do a putter fitting, meeting with the nutritionist’s colleague about a metabolic testing, need to talk with the psychologist about recording my thoughts for his project and am flying to Omaha on Friday to shoot a wedding.. Another good week of getting things accomplished. Think the basement will be finally finished too, so I can move downstairs and enjoy a little more space.

Lots to do for the time being, including seven more days of sipping cups of tea and sitting around waiting for “shot approvals” out here in Newberg. Hard to say what life will be like a month from now, but whatever direction it takes, I’m ready for the change. I hope The Plan is just the beginning.

listening

Thought a lot about yesterday’s meeting with my coach, physical trainer and others, and I feel like I’ve somehow forgotten how important it is to listen to people. It seems that the older I get, the more I assume that I know what is best and what people are trying to convey, but I think we should never feel like we have it all figured out. Hopefully The Plan will force me to slow down in many aspects. I am, after all, back in training “school” and it is in a field that I do not know anything about.

So.. shut up and listen, Dan. It will help you learn.

Final pre-meetings

Christopher Smith's swing room

Was a good day for meeting up with people.
Went over to the Kor and saw Christopher (golf coach) and Donn (strength trainer). It had been a little while since I had visited them and was good to get a few more details ironed out. We still have not gotten clubs or decided exactly how or where to start, but we did plan to meet one more time for a putter fitting and to pick out some public courses to train at.
It was a much less formal meeting, kind of a round robin of sorts with a few people poking their heads in to talk with Christopher while we chatted. One was a man from Nike, who seemed a interested in the plan, saying that at the least we need to start a dialogue and perhaps meet up with the marketing department in the next few weeks. Would be pretty amazing to get a sponsorship by a company like them, especially seeing as at this point I have yet to play the game.. That said, I think they can see the potential of this project.
After viewing the talk CS and I had with the Nike man, I realized that I seriously need help with my communication skills. Kind of all over the place when someone asks a question about the plan. Also, need to listen more.. Lots to learn.
I’ve included a pic of CS’s swing room. This is where we will be meeting for one-on-ones when we are not out on a course somewhere.
