Just got this new putter and a couple pairs of golfing shoes!

Yesterday was a good day.  Went out to Pumpkin Ridge to meet up with Christopher (CS) for a lesson and he had a few presents for me, courtesy of Nike.  They were a brand new putter and two pairs of golfing shoes, as well as a “loaner” rain jacket from CS too.  I really appreciate all of the help that people have offered along the way and would like to thank Nike for supplying some gear for The Plan!

Today was a bit of a strange day.  I putted better than I ever have before, actually broke the 90% barrier in my three foot game (where I putt 100 balls from six different areas around the hole, all three feet away).  Before, I had only gotten in the 80% level twice, but this morning I was on fire.  That said, after 1.5 hours, I could barely concentrate and felt exhausted, so decided to go to the Edge gym and workout, then go home and do my Synergy Center exercises.  I took a nap and felt a bit refreshed in the afternoon, but still, only lasted about two hours back out at Broadmoor.  But, I did putt 84% in the afternoon, for a daily total of 87.25%.  By far the best I’ve done so far.

I hope this is a continuous upward trend.  If so, I should be solidly in the 90% range in the next couple weeks and ready to move forward to five feet.  Oh my!  Seems like small potatoes, but It’s the first major milestone of The Plan..

Think I am going to enjoy this weekend off, I’m beat!

Dan-merican gothic, with putter

Another great day today.  went out to Heron Lakes in the morning and then over to Broadmoor in the afternoon.  Also had a stop at the gym for a workout and went down to the Synergy Training Center for my first session with Darren Painter.

I started Darren’s year-long cognitive performance course today and I think it is going to be a good addition to The Dan Plan.  All I can say at this point is that it involves daily activities which combine physical movements with mental exercises.  It starts with simple things like balancing while reading and moves quickly to more advanced combinations as soon as one is mastered.  I am doing to program to help with my physical balance and mental focus.  I’ll need all the focussing help I can get once we delve into the world of actual golf competitions.

So yes, it was a good day and I learned a lot of new things, while figuring out a bit of how I am going to be able to logistically fit everything into a week, which is still looking possible, even with weekends off!

Tomorrow, we head back out to Pumpkin Ridge to have another lesson with Christopher Smith.

Tuesdays are my new favorite days.

Went to a new public course today. Heron Lakes is a beautiful course in North Portland

Tuesdays at the place I worked before Beginning The Plan were always my least favorite days.  It wasn’t quite the middle of the week, there wasn’t the freshness of Monday around and the day just felt like it lasted forever.  Not so anymore.

Today I realized that Tuesday is my favorite day of the week.  It’s those days that I have no obligations other than going out and golfing as much as I can.  Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are my workout days, so I go to the gym in the middle of the day.  I don’t mind working out, in fact have found it quite enjoyable, but it’s just another “thing” to have to do that keeps me from practicing.  Thursdays aren’t too shabby either, but those are the days that I meet up with the golf coach, which is also a good thing, but is a 30 mile drive to where his course is, so I end up spending over an hour in the car.  Tuesdays are completely free to practice, as much as possible and for as long as I can keep my concentration.

Today’s Tuesday was a good Tuesday.  I got wet in some early morning downpours, but then the sun came out and my surrounding out at Heron Lakes were fairly astonishing.  It is a public course in North Portland and I was surprised at how nice it is out there.  Perhaps the fact that there were multiple rainbows in the morning sunlight helped a bit, but still, it is a good spot to escape the city for a bit.

After spending the morning out at Heron, I came home to eat a bit and relax the back.  It was still bothering me, but I had taken an aleve that I think helped.  It wasn’t nearly as bad as Monday, so I guess that means no more digging holes on my “rest” day of Sunday.  I new I should have taken it a bit easier, but the weather was so perfect on Sunday and I really wanted to plant some things in the front yard, so went for it.  From now on, though, Sunday is a non-lifting/digging day and if I have the urge to plant a tree, it will have to be done on Saturday.

Also, today was much more productive in the sense of making shots day.  I think that the new stance that coach told me to do had finally sunk in.  Either that or I have reverted to my old way of standing, but it still feels a little off, so I am pretty sure I’m still doing the new one.  The head pro over at Broadmoor (went there for the afternoon and got dumped on by rain again..) shouted out that I was swinging better, so something must be new.

Feeling like I’m about to fall to sleep, so I better cook some dinner and take care of some things around the house.  Tomorrow is going to be a good day, but there is a lot to do.  Have about three hours in the AM to golf, then hit the gym and then head down to see Darren Painter at the Synergy Training Center to begin a “Cognitive Performance” circuit.  I’m excited to be able to have Darren on the team and will know a lot more about what his program entails soon.

easy sundays

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 6:49 pm

I am supposed to take it easy on Sunday.  It is the “recovery” day of the week and the plan is to lay low and let my body build back muscles from the week’s workouts and to solidify my possibly sore back.

so..  I of course overdid it a bit and am now finally sitting down after a busy day of digging holes in the yard and jogging.  I will just have to wait and see how I feel tomorrow, but if being this active on the weekend hinders my training, I’ll have to cut it back.  It did feel pretty good to get a bunch of plants in the ground now that spring is here, though..

On another note.  I went and met with Darren Painter on Friday at the Synergy Training Center in Lake Oswego.  He is a Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapist and offers a year-long program aimed at increasing your ability to focus and mental performance, among other things.  I was a bit skeptical of the process at first, but after meeting with him and talking about the program (and talking to others who know Darren and people who have done his program) I’ve decided to go for it.  He works with a lot of athletes and if his program can help me retain everything I am trying to learn, then I’m all for it.  I can use every bit of help I can get, this is quite the uphill journey I have just begun..

We start this Wednesday.  Not sure exactly what we will be doing, but will definitely blog about it as it happens.

Off to eat some dinner and then try and actually rest for the few hours left in Sunday.  I’m excited to start week three tomorrow!  Looking at my progress last week was encouraging.  Although slight, I could see that I was really improving every day.  If you want to see my daily percentages, click on the stopwatch at the top of the page..

What a world

Went out to see Christopher at Pumpkin Ridge today and it was unexpectedly cold out. Weather said it was supposed to hit 65, but there was a breeze out of the west that must have been in the low 40s. Made me think that I need to have a spare change of everything in my car just in case, would be a shame to get out to a course somewhere and have to stop playing because I forgot a raincoat, or to just have a miserable time because I didn’t have gloves or a coat..

That aside, we went over a lot of new material and answered some questions I had about putting.
First off, I wasn’t sure if when you are putting you are supposed to keep your legs still or swing them along with your upper body. Coach set me straight about that one and gave me a practice routine focussing on NOT moving anything below the waist. On a side note, he emphasized a few times that there is no “right” way of swinging, but rather there are a few proven methods that could accelerate my progress.
In that line of thought, we also examined the distance I was standing away from the ball and adjusted that to where I was bending my back a bit more. Also, he drew a red dot on the ball and wanted me to keep seeing that dot for at least half a second after I hit it, ie don’t turn my head until the swing is finished.
Between those three new approach techniques, I think I have my hands full this coming week just to get back to where I was as far as consistency. I went back out after our lesson and where I was hitting four of every six putts, I’m now just barely over three. But, I like this new challenge and realize that the next four years will be nothing without constant reassessments and adjustments.

Also met with Derrin Painter today and talked about his year-long course of cognitive development. Christopher is a big proponent of it and I must admit I am interested, but finding it a bit hard to bite the bullet and commit to it for a year. But, am going in tomorrow to have a two-hour long assessment of my brain where he will tell me how my brain works and how he can improve it. I’m very interested. About him: he used to be a professional distance runner with team USA and now works in sports psychology and brain development. He has clients from pro athletes to children and adults with attention or other mental difficulties. Not sure what to expect. Will know more tomorrow.

Outside if all of that, felt good today, only a bit of back soreness and fatigue, but all in all, it’s been a great first full week.

a breakthrough a day

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:40 pm

Seems that there is at least one major breakthrough a day during these early times.  Yesterday it was that if I kept my wrists solid (ie. don’t bend them during the swing) I have a stronger chance of making consecutive shots.  I also learned yesterday that (and this one is a duh, but everything is new and is a discovery in a way) if I hit the ball with the club face as straight as possible, the ball will in turn go straight.  Those two things helped push up my consistency in both the ten foot putting game and the three foot putting wheel game, or pretty much in everything I am doing at this point.

Today I was a bit surprised by what I learned.  I found that by shutting my eyes just before I hit the ball and keeping them closed for the entire swing, I am actually more accurate.  I thought it was a fluke, so measured ten shots with my eyes open and ten with my eyes closed and the results were as I thought, I was actually more accurate with my eyes closed.

My thoughts are that this is due to two things.

First, when my eyes are shut, I trust the line that my practice swing was on and am, by feel alone, recreating that swing.  When I am looking at the ball, I have a feeling that I make minor last second “corrections” just before hitting the ball, but when not looking, I can only go by feel.  Good news is, my gut is correct in taking aim.  bad news, it would be a bit strange to learn how to putt blindfolded.  I’ll have to talk to coach about this one tomorrow.

Second contributor to this is that I really concentrate on swinging perfectly when my eyes are closed.  When I am looking, I think that I focus more on the ball then on the swing.  I think this is a good sign too, just have to really get to trust my swing and stop thinking about every tiny movement that I see..

It was a good day.  spent about 6.5 hours out there and got a workout in between sessions.  Tomorrow we head back out to Pumpkin Ridge to have another lesson with coach.  Should be good.

where's waldo game of finding the hole I practice on. hint, it's the one where I've unfortunately killed most of the grass.

Resting after a good tuesday

I think I love my new job. I say think because there’s bound to be some very trying times, but if there are a lot of days like today, I’m going to love this.

Not that today was especially good for any reason, it was rainy out and my putting was about where one would think it would be after just three days of practice, but because it is just me pushing me out there. If I do poorly, I can only blame myself, and if great things happen, it’s because I’ve practiced sufficiently. And, there is no “running late to work” or “skipping out early,” but instead I get to train as hard as I feel I can and call it a day before I start to make mistakes that would hinder my progress. It’s pretty much a perfect job, outside of the whole “pay” thing… But, that will come with success in The Plan, so the harder I train, the more likely I will be able to keep this up! Four years is the goal, but for now, just taking it day by day, then week by week, month by month, etc..

So, I think I love my new job, and did I mention that it rained on and off all day today?

Breakfast of champs.

yogurt, granola and spirulina. nice.

Diet is one of those things that will be constantly tweaked as the plan evolves..  Today, on the first Monday of a full week of The Plan, I decided to go with a bowl of vanilla yogurt filled with granola I got out of the bulk bins at Newseasons (a local grocery store here in Portland).  And topped that off with a glass of mega greens and spirulina.  It was a good way to start the day and I brought a couple ounces of almonds and an apple for a mid-morning snack too.  But, even with the almonds and apple, after about four hours of concentrating on putting, I was a bit too ravenous to stay out any longer.  Had to head home for lunch.  Tomorrow, I think I will try and add a bit of fruit to the morning equation and perhaps a small additional source of protein.  One thing that always seems to work with me is a bagel topped with peanut butter, maybe that will be brought as a snack..

Also, went and had a workout over at the Kor in Beaverton.  it about an hour after lunch, so wasn’t worried about fuel going into it, but brought an apple and my water bottle with a scoop of whey protein in it for immediately afterwords.  Seemed to hit the spot!

One week down, 207 to go

This was the first week of foregoing my life as a commercial photographer and entering into the world of full-time golfer.  But, it wasn’t quite a full transition yet, because we didn’t start golfing until Thursday, so had the beginning of the week to get other things organized, which turned out to be a godsend, because I got the house finished and the inspector came and approved the year-long project of finishing my basement.  Now, with that finished and having quit my job, I am free to fully pursue golfing for the next four years.

So, week one was a success.  Along with the other stuff, I got to be out on the greens for about 13 hours this week and actually enjoyed every minute of it.  I do realize that my sense of excitement will wane over the months and years, but I just hope that I can remember these first days when I’m getting bogged down by the enormity of it all somewhere down the road.  I think the constant encouragement I am already getting from strangers will help (Can’t count the number of people who have said that this is either their dream or that they have always wanted to pursue something similar).  But, all in all, we’re just looking from day to day.  For today, I move into the new bedroom down in the basement and contact a friend of a friend who expressed interest in doing some of the filming for The Plan.

It’s also my first weekend, so I’m off to have a cup of tea and do a bit of relaxing..

Lesson one, completed.

Just got back from my first actual lesson with Christopher Smith (CS).  We met out at Pumpkin Ridge and went over a few tasks that I will be doing for the first few weeks/months of the plan.   All in all, I was definitely a beginner, but am really excited about getting started and changing that.  Even from the beginning of our lesson to the end I noticed a slight difference in my ability to aim and control the ball.

CS had me first putt from about 18″ away, placing the balls in a circle around the hole.  I missed two of the first six I attempted, but once I got a feel for the putter (was using one of his as a “loaner” until mine gets in, it’s still in the mail).  After that, I made 50 of 50 without too much of a hitch, although most of those were not hit dead center and I could tell that if it was from even two feet out I would have been missing left and right..

Next we decided to do an exercise that was suggested by Dr. Hill.  The point of this one, I think, is to gain control of distance and angle of putts.  We measured out a ten foot length of the putting green and placed a coin on both sides.  We putted ten balls from coin “A” and measured the distance the ball landed away from coin “B,” from both how far left or right the ball landed and how far in front or behind I hit it.  Then we did the same, except from “B” to “A.”  For future reference, we called this the “ten foot measurement pass.”  I was much better, for some unknown reason, hitting the ball from “B” to “A.”  I haven’t crunched the numbers yet, but I’d say I averaged 30″ behind the ball hitting from “A” to “B” and about 10″ the other direction.  as a distance left or right, from “A” to “B” I missed by an average of 8″ and only 4″ the other way.

We also did a guessing game where I hit the same distance and without looking where the ball went I tried to guess where it landed.  I was ok at guessing whether it landed to the left or right, but my feel for distance was pretty far off.

Finally, we marked off six spots around a hole that were three feet away and putted going around in a circle to see how consistent I could hit the ball.  CS was a bit stale himself at first when he tried, sinking 3 of 6 on the first round (in his defense he was using a brand new putter too..) but then got his rhythm and sunk the next 6 for 6.  I started off pretty well, sinking 10 of my first 12, then settled down to average 4 of 6 for the first 60.  Was going to do 100, but needed to get Peter, who was there shooting video, back to Portland and we were both hungry, so left Pumpkin Ridge for the day.

So, now I have a few games/exercises in my repertoire for the coming weeks.  Start small, there’s plenty of time!

CS and I meet next Thursday.  For now, it’s back out for a couple more hours today and then off to Kor tomorrow AM for workout number 2 with Donn.  (Guess it’s about time for another one, my muscles have had three nice days to be sore.)
