Thanks for the comment, mygreenjacket, just saw you on twitter and am interested in your experiences as well. Not sure how I will be counting full rounds of golf yet, but will see what it's like when the time comes and make due. The one thing is, I don't plan on ever playing leisurely golf during this journey, every round counts and I think that learning how to manage you brain and energy levels during a round is vital, so we'll see what it ends up being, perhaps two hours..
Thanks again for following along and have a great one!

Dan, just came across this project -- love the idea. I'm a fellow traveller in the middle of his own long-term improvement plan. I've done a lot of reading about deliberate practice, and I'm in year four of trying to become a professional writer. Learning all the lessons you're learning about perseverance and just how intimidating this learning curve can be. Right now, writing a good short story feels about as hard as shooting a 55 at the Masters. Best of luck to you, and I'll be following your progress with some interest.

And let me chip in some training advice from my two summers playing golf: keep your knees bent, eye on the ball, and follow through!

As someone who is engaged in a comparable golf project, I am going to be following your progress very closely - this is fascinating stuff. I set myself the challenge to go from a 25 handicap to scratch in 18 months, and with a week left I've made it as far as a 10 handicap. A lot of people have put the '10 000 hours' words in my mouth, but the truth is that I hadn't even heard of Gladwell or his theories when I started. I've be surprised if I've even done 1000 hours thus far so maybe I haven't done too bad!

Obviously I've spent way more hours than that playing golf, but it doesn't seem right to count a 4-hour round as 4 hours when most of it is spent walking between shots. I'd call it more like 1 hour! What's your approach to that issue going to be?

I've done things upside down from you, starting my intense work as someone who had played the game before and was mildly addicted. There's no way I could have kept away from the course as long as you have - I think only a true novice could do it.

Good luck!

Hi there, Dan. Me again. Just read your reply and pondering over it. You are totally right that anything is possible in this world and we just need to take that first step. However, it's no less crucial and not easy to stick to the end with, like you said, 100 percent of our energy the entire time. So please do share with us how do you hold on till the end, your passion for golf? belief of success? or you just want to prove something? because, you know, there'll be hardships, distractions, and other difficulties you can never foresee. BTW, I'm not a pessimistic person. I just think too much. And you should know, any of your progress is encouragement. Go for it!
