Dan, thanks for the review. I should have made this comment earlier, but every bit of press like this has helped propel Dixon into what it is today!

I know what you mean about not being able to lose a Wilson. I found one years ago and have gone through moving country, starting a family, many random rounds of golf and everytime I lose a Srixion and I reach into the bag and pull out the Wilson I can't lose the damn thing. Not a great ball but when you can't lose 'em you can't bag 'em. Good luck with the rest of your quest.

Why does any of this matter when your handicap hasn't improved in a year? It seems to me a lot of these quests turn into circle jerks of self-improvement, philosophy, pondering your mental game, etc. A lot of your posts about golf even seem to lack direction. I can't pinpoint, but it feels you lack conviction. Tiger Woods wouldn't be writing a blog like this. I don't see a champion reading this blog, and if you aren't aiming to be the best you are in the wrong field. Luckily you can change this.

Just as an FYI, Wilson Staff is a big name brand. they're not the marketing juggernaut like Titleist or TaylorMade, but like the ad says, more Majors have been won with Wilson Staff irons than any other brand. Lots of folks like those FG Tour balls and game them. I'm not a cheerleader...I'm not a massive fan of that ball myself. I just wanted to drop the FYI on you is all. BTW Padraig Harrington plays a bag full of Wilson clubs. Also, some dude just won the European Senior Open or some such last week, using Wilson Staff irons and a new Wilson Staff FG proto ball.

Take it you're trolling. Personally I enjoy this blog. There's no one else I know of doing anything like it. Documenting in great detail an attempt to become world class or close to it, in a discipline, starting from 0 experience, as a mature adult.
My own forecast is that Dan will become a very good golfer, but it will be extremely difficult to make the cut on a PGA tour event as most golfers on the tour get to scratch some years before they go on tour and then have to spend a further 10,000 hours as tour professionals before making much impact. But what do I know?

As an aside but related, some balls have long ball-names imprinted on the balls, that can be used as a directional guide when teeing off. For example, for improving clubface angle at impact, the ball can be teed up with the ball name perpendicular to the direction of the target. This way, the ball-name shows a "square" guideline for the clubface to take at impact.

Using the "Ball Impact Mark" principle, the ball-name label can be used to determine the clubface angle at the moment of impact. When the ball is teed up with the ball-name label set vertical (up and down, so that the name has to be read with the head tilted sideways) at the back of the ball, a square clubface will contact the vertically set ball-name exactly. An opened clubface will contact to the inside area of the vertical ball-name line, while a closed clubface will contact to the outside area of the vertical ball-name line.

Using the ball-name as guide lines in these ways can promote the development of very accurate control of clubface angle at the moment of impact.
