Dan, I agree in a majority of what you say. Some of College is abit of a downfall based on the ability to recieve low rewards.

I have found that it Gauruntees nothing and the information associated with it could be found online--and cheaper if one was to pursue it on there own.

HOWEVER, Because I started my own plan. Based off of Dymaxion sleeping and time Maximzation, it gives you an outsource to the coachs, teachers and mentors for a specific goal.

Working out---Nutrition Coach. Eating right-- Chef. Psychological evaluations--School Psyhchologists.
All convenitntly placed Right here.

I would not trade the expirence for the world, though you brought up valuable points.

Dan, after 10,000 hours I'm confident that you'll be able to 1) make a living playing tournament golf or 2) make a living opening your own/working at a golf academy or at a club. Either way you will be an expert in the field and a golf "pro". The bottom line is that you'll be at a level where you can make a living at playing/teaching golf and that's pretty amazing.

Hi Russ and everyone,

I'm sorry if that post came off as out of left field or negative towards college. All I was trying to say is that it is important to understand the potential consequences of acquiring large debt. If you made it through college with a small amount of debt that you could pay off in two years that is absolutely wonderful and I encourage everyone to take that path. I think that college can be an enriching period of life and wouldn't encourage people to skip it, just to be wary of signing debt papers without fully understanding what the pay-off period and terms are going to be.

Debt is often a reason people point to when they say they could not afford to do what I am doing and quite often school loans are a large part of that. This blog is about transformation and what is possible in life, not just about golf, and I enjoy writing about how I was able to do this from all sides of the story.

Thank you for reading and for the comments,

Dan

Sorry Dan but I agree with kw, this topic is way off in left field. In a funny way, the blog post reminded me of of those commercials where the guy stays at the Holiday Inn and therfore thinks he is an expert in everything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dOHEw8izno

Maybe stick with golf stuff. When I graduated from college, I had about $10,000 in debt and I was able to pay it off in 2 years. And if it hadn't been for college I would still be a migrant farm worker like my parents were. Maybe if you have a wealthy family you can think outside the box but if you don't have a safety net, it might be better to get your education. It may not guarantee success but it will certainly open doors for you and give you a chance.

Dan,

it's not surprising that somebody who is taking the road less traveled would be wary of the path more traveled. Bravo to you for following your dream and living your life on your own terms.

Still, when it comes to rolling the dice I have a hard time squaring your path with the college path. For the college path we have lots and lots of hard data telling us that ones career will be more rewarding both in terms of money and the intangibles such as making full use of your abilities and really making a difference (however you define "difference"). Yes the price of a college education has grown faster than inflation for some time and I do believe it's something we need to take a hard look at.

Considering your path, there is lots a lots of data letting us know that of the 6 billion people on this planet only a vanishingly small fraction will play professional golf or any professional sport for that matter. My friends and members of my social circle consider me an expert skier and runner but my skill has made me aware of the yawning canyon between myself and somebody who makes their living at a sport. I strongly suspect that if 1 million people spent 10,000 hours in directed practice playing golf you'd still only have a few dozen (if that many) making the tour afterward.

So, yes, follow your dream and I'll be the first to congratulate you if you do indeed accomplish your goal. However, there are many, many jobs out there for people who can think and communicate and those are skills you'll hone in college. If you are going to offer career advice you might want to wait until you actually make the tour.

By the way, I'm rooting for you and find your story fantastically compelling. Keep up the good work. :)
