I totally agree with your comments about effective practice and passion. However i can't get out of my head the idea that no matter how hard I work on these I can never be a Michael Jordan because I am not blessed with the fibres that make him leap so high and i'm never going to be 7 foot tall or im never going to swim faster than Ian Thorpe because he has flippers for feet am my feet are tiny. Maybe golf is a more level playing field in terms of genetics which makes it a great game for everybody. I think soccer(football) is similar as it requires huge amounts of skill which can be learn't rather than being so reliant on genetics. I believe there are many sports that the average Jo Blog, because of genetics will never become a world champ in because the reliance on genetics is simply so big. What do you reckon?

Hello Jim,

Thank you for the comment!

I couldn't agree more of the importance of surrounding yourself with good golfers (or whoever is a leader in the field you strive to succeed in). I try and play with the best golfers around as inevitably things rub off whether you want them to or not. I've learned a lot about the mental game and the mechanics of it all by playing with scratch and plus handicap golfers.

Also, I agree completely that we put too much emphasis on the genetic attributes of certain people. It's the work put in that molds the clay. That is very interesting about the "i could do that" insult, I never really thought about it, but it is quite a self-defeating insult to say..

Keep in touch!

Hi Dan,

Keep up the great work! Your success is important to me because I believe what your blog says here. Skill is a function of practice, not some magical collection of genetic traits. Of course, there are disciplines that sometimes favor genetic attributes, but we as a society give these advantages too much credence. The idea that sports heros are just normal people who have practiced really effectively, is not a view widely held. There is a very popular notion that "you've either got it or you don't". The Dan Plan is helping dispel this myth. It is almost like people are guarding their "super-natural heros theory" because it is easier to emotionally except rather than realizing, on some level, that you could have achieved the same. It is not so much that people don't want to feel like "losers" or "quitters". Rather, I think people like to celebrate greatness and feel their sports idols are somehow tarnished if their achievements are achievable or quantifiable . Walk into any modern art museum and you will hear people saying "I could do that". Strangely, this is an insult that is worse in their mind then, "this is crap".
Anyway, this is a very interesting mission you are on and I look forward to keeping track of your progress. As a humble suggestion, try your best to surround yourself with the best golfers as possible. Though we all acknowledge the 10,000 hour rule as an important benchmark, greatness is seldom cultivated outside of a collective.

Hi StatMan!

That's really a shame that we didn't get to meet up and my trip to San Fran didn't coincide with the Stanford Duck game, what a time that will be!! You gotta love this time of year with college football getting interesting and basketball just starting up.

Can't wait for the driver! and, I've always had a bit of luck on my side and hopefully along with 10,000 hours of preparation we'll make it to the big time.

Have a great one this weekend!

Tony,

I think the idea now is to get the 8 clubs (once I put a driver in the bag) I have down and then "fill in" the rest of them as needed. If I can become solid and consistent with the driver, long irons, wedges and putter I'll be in pretty good shape.

Thanks as always for the comments.
