Josh,
I've talked with a few performance experts and they are in the same camp as you of the 12/16 week training cycles with a week off. I've basically chosen to either have a few days off every 3 months or the days off have chosen me. Regardless of the reason, it's just as important to take a mental/physical break as it is to train hard. Recovery is crucial to learning, as you know.

Just a note about time off. Professional bodybuilders (and other athletes) do cycles of about three months of training (usually a "bulk" cycle then a "lean" cycle), but between cycles they take a week off to rest their bodies. This is not optional when you are performing at a high level all the time (note: this isn't true if you aren't constantly working your hardest) your nervous system gets fatigued and occasionally requires an extended rest. Without it and continuing to workout/train your performance slowly starts degrading and regressing until you burn out and are physically/mentally unable to continue, either from hurting your self or burning out so hard you can barely get motivation to get out of bed. If you don't have anything like this scheduled as part of your training you are doing yourself a disservice and hindering your training. So, far you seem to have lucked into having these breaks at the right time without realizing that you need them to continue improving, but I suggest that you formalize this kind of break in the future.
