It does get harder as you get closer, very true. Shaving it down to an 8.7 really wasn’t too hard, it’s all about playing some consistent rounds. The next step is where the adventure truly begins.

Down to 8.7, only 10 more strokes off to go, then maybe pro! Hope you get there. I’ve found, though, that those last few strokes may take up much of your time. It gets harder and harder. I’d broken par, at least for 9 holes, after 18 months of play, I got down to 5 or so reasonably easily. However, getting down to 3.5 took a lot of work, and then I found I couldn’t get lower! I had no lessons and no pros seemed to take interest in my plight, so perhaps that will give you an edge and help you to get where you need to be. Best to you – Mike

Well done Dan! That’s great progress.
I was trying to remember how long it took me to get to 8. I started playing when I was 10 years old and got to 8 when I was 15 years old (long time ago). You’re well ahead of the curve.

On tournaments, we played “Scratch Cups”. They are 36 hole amateur events with entry limited by handicap but with only gross scores counting. So, great experience for competitive golf. Don’t know what the equivalent is in the U.S.

A word of caution on the handicap: don’t get hung up on it. Technique is more important.

I think She Who Must Be Obeyed knows what I’m up to really. She must do. I mean, our cats didn’t put those dents in the side of the fridge, did they?
Now you tell me that you felt you were better than your earlier handicap! Should have told me that before I took my guess! 8.7, though, is a big big fall – you should be really pleased with that!
