[...] I’m relocating starting October 10. The plan is to visit my family that recently moved to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for between 3 and 4 weeks, to start. There are a ton of golf courses down there and my parents are in the process of moving permanently to the island as well as my brother is visiting with his daughter from Switzerland so it’s a good time to see family and try out some completely different golf courses. I don’t know anything about the area outside of my experience playing Palmetto Dunes’ Robert Trent Jones course last year which was an amazing course. I hope to play it again this go-around, although bring my own gear as anyone who read the blog last year knows that I struggled with a rental “senior to regular flex lefty” set: http://thedanplan.com/trip-away-and-a-60th/ [...]

Guys (MA / Willy), on a serious note... I think that advice such as being able to start from scratch and equipment partially being marketing hype is all good stuff. But I have to disagree and condemn your accusations of Dan being a failure when he is one third of the way through this experiment.

We all monitor this site because we are intrigued as to how Dan is making progress and I for one think that going from a non-player to a 5.3 handicap in the first third of the project is excellent.

The bottom line is that Dan has devoted a large chunk of his life to this project and as onlookers we have the responsibility to give either morale boosting feedback or constructive criticism... Just accusing Dan of being a failure is rude and helps no one!

I hope you guys see this and take it on board, because I think really we'd all love to see Dan succeed and we can help him do that rather than hinder him.

Hi Dan

I do a lot of travelling and golf in my business life. Several years ago I took the stance to carry my clubs if I was going to play at least two rounds. Which pushes me to find time / course / client for a second round if only one is foreseen. Recently a colleague had to rent clubs in Asia; what a mess, drivers was 14 years old soft flex (he is 6'4'' and 300 lbs), irons were cheap no brand cast blades lookalike, grips were dry and dirty. I have seen and experienced it too many times, and it will take the enjoyment out of your round, as it will get into your head and that will be all you can think abt. I remember having a driver where the head/hosel was bent out of shape by several degrees, try to hit that. Or try to reach that 450 yds uphill par 4 when you tee off with an (ancient) 3 wood.

One tip for me is to make it as convenient as possible. I have a 10 yrs old cargogolf travel bag, very slim, fits all 14 clubs, extremely sturdy and with an outside cover you zip on. I also learned to pack light on other golf related items, Ecco spikeless shoes I can wear on the plane for example, minimal pouch wiith tees and a dozen balls, no kore than 2 t-shirts (you might find a nice one on sale in the pro-shop).

Whereas I love to try new and/or different equipment (even classic blades of good quality will do), what you get in rentals is mostly crap, unless you play a high-end resort, and then it will be expensive, $50 easily. I must add that I am 6'3'', so standard clubs will be short for me. And it seems that the rest of the world outside USA does not charge for carrying golf clubs.

Stay well and regards from Switzerland.

As you get better you are going to need different clubs.
But it's a chicken and egg situation...which one is going to happen first?
Not all the pro's use blades. Freddie Jacobsen won with Callaway Diablos and Lee Westwood uses i20's.
Always go for something more forgiving and work hard on your short game/putting.
Maybe the top line pro's need to shape shots for the occasional extra birdie but the rest just need to hit greens in reg and make some putts.

I googled bellend, harry thats funny. However, MA is right, Dan is a good recreation golfer, his finances are a mess obviously (nothing bringing clubs over a hundred bucks..?), his scores are worse, by this point the fact that he consistently shoots in the 80's tells me that this is a failure. Sports and especialy pro-sports are not things that anyone can do, you are either born with the ability or you aren't. There are guys at Dan's club that play golf 2-3 times a week and don't practice who would beat Dan by 8-10 strokes everytime they play. Your main supporters know nothing about golf and while I appreciate that they have your back they just have no idea what it takee to make it onto the pga tour. And I imagine no videos is also a financial issue...
