I think you need to work with other people, whether they're coaches or not may be irrelevant.
Have you considered trying to find a regular practice partner?

Find another aspiring pro or somebody else who is also working hard to improve their game, and meet up with them two - four times a week. Discuss your goals together, agree what to work on together, watch each other for mistakes and keep each other honest when practicing. Yes have coaching sessions, but in between use your practice partner to make sure you're following through on the coaches recommendations.

I read this today and thought of you. It was written by zen practitioner Adam Fisher.

"How important I think it is for people to find their willingness to run. Any subject or framework or matter of love will do. No more half-measures -- just run. Run through the explanations and control and analyses. Run though others cheer or weep. Run through pain and fear and right and wrong and elevated and debased. Run through family and friends, enemies and detractors. Run through failure and success. No more cotton balls of excuse or wisdom. No more coitus-interruptus living. No more birth and death. Just find one thing and go the distance ... just once...run.
It doesn't matter what the framework or topic is."

Hey Dan,

good to hear about how the project is going big picture wise. And it seems as if Bruce is right: having consistent, regular feedback can make a huge difference in the amount and speed of progress.

I've never even looked at golf lessons with someone of Bruce's caliber, but I can imagine that they involve the sort of money that for an ordinary person represent a serious investment, and for someone rich is just walking around money. So I'm just wondering if you've thought about reaching out to people who are interested not so much in sports, but in the proposition about talent that you're trying to prove, who might contribute to your project. That might include grants from foundations, but also reaching out to someone like Gladwell, who might know some rich folks who'll fund lessons for a year on a lark. (I know, it's weird to think of amounts of money that are require serious decisions for us as money to be spent on a lark for others. But I do think that's a reality.) The simple fact that you've stuck with the project for as long as you have shows that you're serious and that you're not just going to fritter away whatever money you might get.

I'm basically suggesting that, as you think about income streams, you not just think about your project specifically as a golf project, looking for golf sponsors, but as a "talent myth" project that might be funded by "talent myth" sponsors.

Good luck in any case. I keep on coming back to the site because it's a real inspiration that you're pursuing this project even though, or perhaps better: because, it's hard, and you face real obstacles.

If you want improve you need to play more and have consistent, frequent coaching. Retaining another professional while Bruce is in CA is a really bad idea. The changeover in your coaching is likely one of the reasons you have not moved forward as hoped.
I am a bit disappointed that you treat reporting scores for handicap as an afterthought. All scores, including match play scores, are supposed to be reported. You can't pick and choose what to record and what to ignore. Take some time some day and review how to record scores to your handicap on the USGA website.

Great post, Dan.
You are totally right, you need a strategy and part of this strategy is not to be “alone”… you need to be surrounded and helped. A regular coach would be great.
How many hours do you play per week (hours broken down in lesson/practice/round of golf ) ?
I was honestly a bit surprised that your official handicap was still 5.9 in August 2013 with all the hours of practice but this game must be crazier (no offense, your goal is really great, I would love to do the same!) than I think…;-)
My index is 12.5 but play around 16/18, sometimes a bit more…for now. I also have a plan (lessons, practice sessions and rounds): to be a single digit player.
Thanks for the blog !
