Dual Inspiration

Over the past couple of week, I have started playing a few 9-hole rounds with a new friend, Rob.  He’s a good golfer and has helped me with course management and keeping a consistent mindset throughout a round, but more-so than that, Rob has added fuel to the fodder of The Dan Plan.

As it turns out, Rob had a heart transplant last year and began his recovery almost to the day that I started this project.  He was in the self-proclaimed worst shape in his life, had been on different medicines that caused him to gain a lot of weight, had been in a bed for weeks and had a new heart in his chest that his body was trying to fight off.  But like a true fighter, Rob told himself that he would work every day to “get my life back.”  Now, 16 months later, Rob ran 2.2 miles yesterday (the farthest he has run since before the surgery) and then played 9 holes of golf (walking, of course) on one of the hottest days of the year.

Here he is teeing off on the par 3 17th hole of CECC:

Not sure if I even need to say it, but seeing how someone can overcome an obstacle as large as a new heart makes any other task seem easy.  No matter what your goal is, just break it down into small daily steps.  So many times we get overwhelmed by the bigger picture and forget that all we can do today is all we can do today.

Rob says he is inspired by The Dan Plan, but I think we all know who is the source of inspiration in this pair of golfers :)
