A lesson a day and a new club
You really do learn something every day. For better or worse, it’s next to impossible to go through a day without picking up at least some new piece of knowledge.
Today was no different. I learned a few things. First off: I realized half way through the front nine that when you introduce a new club to your game it is probably better to test it on the range rather than on the course itself. I was so excited to hit an 8-iron for the first time that I gave it about three whacks on the range and then headed out to play 18-holes from the red tees. And, just to remember what it looked like all new and clean, I took a picture:
That shine’s not going to last long out there
For the technical people in the audience, it’s a Nike Pro Combo forged blade style 8-iron. Those are the irons that I am learning to hit with.
I got a bit overambitious and went out to play 18. I was actually doing fairly well at first, (well not exactly right off the bat, my first tee shot was a bit thin) but then started hitting a bit left, and then more left, and then a bit more left until I was up against a tree on the fourth hole. I figured I could fade a shot around the trunk and went for it, but the ball shot out, ricochet off the tree 5 yards in front of me and my reflexes kicked, snagging the ball with my left had before it did a bit of free dental work on me.
For some reason, this really cracked me up.. And even though I got a two stroke penalty for catching the ball and then proceeded to hit it in the water for a 7 over on the par 5, my round started to look up from that moment. Sometimes you just need a bit of self awareness to remind you of where you are and what you are doing. Today, that came in the form of a golfball in the face.
Seven over on the fourth hole and 14 over for the front nine, but once I got the club tuned in a bit the back was better. Shot 6 over on that side for a 92 total. Not my best round, but then again it’s just my second round and first with an 8-iron.
Not sure if it needs mentioning, but the second thing I learned was that survival instincts are stronger than the urge to save two strokes. I could have ducked, but that arm just shot up and caught the ball..
what a great day! Ok, back out to the range with me.
