Getting fit for the right golf ball.

I ran into a Titleist ball fitting van yesterday at Langdon Farms after a lesson with swing coach Bruce Furman. I learned a few things from the guys and figured it best to show a video of the experience rather than just writing about it. They will be in Oregon all week at different locations and then off to Washington. It was fun to go through the process and I parted with a sleeve of balls, which is always awesome. TrackMan was in full force to figure out the details of my ball flight, too.

This is cool Dan. Those guys know their stuff. One of my good friends, Chris Thompson, is a ball fitter for Titleist. What driver specs did they fit you to when you got your new clubs?

Written somewhere is someone quoting Hogan as saying a higher compression ball on approach shots stops better on very hard greens. In the old days, the Titleist “black” (the printings on the ball were in black color) was the high 100 compression ball, versus the Titleist “red” lower 90 compression ball. Maybe it is psychological, the higher compression “black” ball seemed to curve less, and it has good stopping power making a robust ball mark on hitting the green, although on very hard baked out greens, it is still hard to stop an approach shot. Wonder if Nike is giving out free samples in your neck of the woods, being Nike is based in Portland.

You are referring to a wound golf ball. Those same specs no longer apply with the modern layered polyurathane golf ball. You used to have to adjust the compression based on weather conditions to make sure you could properly compress the ball. Now with the way the variable layers work together, you no longer have to do so. They are mostly fitting for spin these days. Having the right amount of spin and correct launch angles can really help with distance.

Very cool information…probably the most informative video that I have seen in quite awhile…Can’t wait to find a Titleist golf ball fitting in my state!
