Heads up

Just throwing this out there. I would love to play Pumpkin Ridge at least once before the tournament on April 21, but it’s a pretty pricey course ($90 for a morning round). Does anyone have a connection out there? Anyone want to play a round one day next week?

Hey Dan I’ve been following you for a few months, hope you get a chance to play the course before the tournament.

Is it the Ghost Creek course you will be playing? If so there’s a digital recreation of this course made for a computer game that might help you to form your strategy for playing the course. Viewing or playing it this way might be the next best thing to actually playing it. If you’re interested I can get you a free download of the game and course, just let me know.

I’ve been on the fence after getting paired with a member who was playing Quail instead because both sides of Pumpkin were “unplayable” two weeks ago due to saturation.

I went out there today to take a look and it’s much better, although the high school teams playing today were on winter rules and plugging balls.

The afternoon rate is $60, at least through Golf Now with at least 2 players. I’d like to play it before the 21st but that’s still a bit steep, especially when Quail is $30 and drier.

My “play” days in the next week are tomorrow (Fri), and next Weds/Thu/Fri with Weds my last choice due to graveyard shift Tue night.

Most golf courses in the area are “unplayable” due to the recent wet weather. EVERYONE will be playing winter rules in tournament situations for weeks (maybe months) to come. Welcome to golf in the Northwest, hombre. Play a ‘practice round’ on a course where the tournament proper is not being staged? Really? Course knowledge of Quail Valley not extremely helpful for playing Ghost Creek…

I was explaining why I haven’t played it yet. When a member of a club like Pumpkin is playing Quail, that says a lot.

Ghost Creek now looks much better, which is why I sent an email offering to join Dan next week.

You mentioned handicap in one of your most recent clock comments. Even if you want to keep a tournament handicap I would also like to follow your ‘actual’ handicap.

I suspect that you have decided to stop keeping track of it as it has likely gone up since the last revision and you want to just stay with the 8 handicap. This is dishonest however as many of us have said from the beginning that your handicap should rise and fall throughout the Dan plan. You shouldn’t simply decide not to update it because it is trending up.

There’s absolutely no ‘good’ reason for you to stop updating your handicap at this stage.

I’d have thought that once Dan starts playing tournaments, only tournament scores are relevant to his handicap.

I’ll have to check that out. I think I’ll be able to go play it one day next week, but in the meantime it’s always good to know about the layout and distances of the holes.

Jerome is pretty solid. He says he plays off a 16 handicap, but the way he strikes the ball and putts I think he’s an easy single digit guy. He had a great mindset throughout the round no matter the result of the shot which he probably learned from his years in the NBA. All in all, it was fun to play with him and he can move it.

I don’t feel like I have to justify myself on the handicap issue. My goal is to establish a tournament handicap as that is the one that matters. But, anyone else have thoughts on this? I’m curious as to your opinions. For me, non-tournament rounds are ones to work on things, when the tourneys start it’s “bring what you got” and see where you’re at time.

Hey, Dan! It’s been fun following you for the past year after hearing about your plan and first catching up on the year I missed. I’ve been inspired by your journey. I’ve even started rebuilding my own swing after 32 years because I’d hit a plateau between a 5 and 6 and I believe I can still get better. Anyway…regarding the handicap thing, I’d say post only your tournament scores IF you are consistently playing a lot of tournaments. I know too many players who keep their handicaps higher by posting rounds during which they did nothing but experiment with new shots, different clubs, etc. so as to become better golfers but still compete in the same flights in tournaments and that is what I would really consider dishonest. Just one man’s opinion. Look me up if you’re ever looking for a round here in the Valley of the Sun!

Hello Jeff,

Good point about keeping my handicap honest for my flight in tournaments. I hadn’t really thought about that as I want to only play for gross scores. But, if I do keep one round per week as a scoring round I should be able to keep an honest handicap and not end up being a sandbagger..
