Time to up the ante

It has been two weeks since I received a new set of clubs and changed my swing at the same time, and during that span things have been far from easy or smooth as far as actual playing goes, but I am starting to get the groove back and am ready for the next chapter in The Dan Plan.

This weekend, I signed up for the 95th annual Portland City Golf Championship at East Moreland Golf Course.  It’s not a super huge event by any means, but will be the first individual two-day tournament I have played in.  It is also the first individual tournament I have played since the event in late April at Pumpkin Ridge, so I’m excited to get back into a competitive mode and see what happens when not only 18 holes really count, but there are 36 on the line.

East Moreland can be a tough track due to the tight fairways and winding holes and I have a game plan for the event to keep it in play as much as possible.  There are a few holes where it’s good to get aggressive and try to bomb the drive, but on most of them the safe play is to be sure you aren’t in the punishing trees lining the fairways.  Today, I went out and played 18 at Columbia Edgewater with a group of guys where there was a little money on the line and tried to implement this strategy.  I hit a lot more fairways than normal and had plenty of looks at greens with short sticks in hand.  My irons were off (still haven’t really found the feel for the new ones) and I ended up chipping on too many holes, but over the next three days I am going to try and hone in the irons and find the feel.  Once I get those down a bit better I know that I can score anywhere and have a good shot at shooting low this weekend.

It is time to start registering rounds towards the handicap again, too.  When I got the new clubs I decided to take two weeks off of keeping score to work on the clubs and new swing mechanics rather than falling back to my old habits.  This is an important part of the plan, you shouldn’t always play for score, sometimes you need to go out and drop multiple balls at different locations and experiment with new things.  I’ve been doing that and have had a couple of “ah-ha” moments and am ready to get right back in the scoring saddle.

Some people have said that it’s not “fair” of me to take some time away from playing for score and recording rounds, but as far as I am concerned it is all part of the learning process.  Sometimes you have to allow yourself building periods where you shouldn’t think about anything but learning a new swing or stick.  These last two weeks just happened to be a combination of those two aspects and a good chance to hunker down and work out some kinks.

I had one of those “ah-ha” moments today after my round.  I was chipping around a practice green and for some time my coach has been telling me to have less wrist hinge in my takeaway.  I’ve been working on that for too long, but today I realized why he wants me to do it.  I am not going to get into the specifics with what was happening in the club, but out of the blue it made sense to hit the ball the way he was telling me too and at the same time the feel for the new swing dawned on me.  This isn’t the first time that someone has told me what I need to do but then it has taken me months to truly understand exactly what is meant by the change.  At times things click right away and at other times long periods have to pass until it is fully understood.  This is the beauty of practicing regularly, you allow yourself the appropriate time to consume the thought and implement it into what you are trying to do.

There is knowledge and then there is comprehension.  I see my coach for the right knowledge, but I have to put in the time to gain deep understanding/comprehension.

3,100 hours + to date.  People always ask me if I think I am where I should be at this point.  It’s hard to say.  I am constantly learning and improving in my game, but after two years of practice am I where I should be?  What do you think?
