watching learning

This week has been good.  I feel as though there have been breakthroughs every day and plenty of “a-ha” moments, much more than in the past few weeks combined.  Things seem on the verge of a whole new level and I am starting to realize that I am actually already a scratch golfer, just haven’t allowed myself to play to my maximum ability yet.

I never know why a week is good or off, but this week I think it’s because of inspiration I found in a 6-year-old.  My girlfriend’s son had been wanting to learn how to ride a bike all summer, but a little intimidated by the idea of taking off the training wheels.  We had all talked about it over the past two months, but the timing never seemed right until a couple of nights ago.  Orion and I took his bike and headed to a playground that had a large paved area.  He was hesitant at first and I ran behind him holding his back, but after a couple of attempts he had his balance set and I started letting go.  After he realized that he was riding it without any help he got excited and wanted me to let him go more.  He rode it up and down the lot in straight lines for about 15 minutes and we called it a day, it was a successful outing and he had officially ridden a bike without training wheels on it for the first time.

Two days later, we went out again.  This time, all I had to do was give him a tiny push to get the wheels rolling and he was off.  After just 15 minutes of practice in his entire life of riding a bike on two wheels he was already doing this:

It was amazing.  His mind was open to the idea of learning and learning he did.  An open mind doesn’t plateau; keep learning = keep growing.  Just like Orion learning to ride the bike, I knew that as long as I continue to push myself and try new things I will grow as a golfer.  So, this whole week I have been thinking outside the box and attempting anything that seems like it could work.  A lot of times the new ideas aren’t exactly groundbreaking and go nowhere, but on occasion there are the “a-ha” moments that help propel you to the next level.
